MINUTES OF SUMMER GENERAL MEETING
HAWAII YACHT CLUB
1. CALL TO ORDER: Commodore Harper called the meeting to order at 1815.
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS PRESENT: Commodore Harper, Vice Commodore Doyle, Rear Commodore Myrdal, Secretary Russell, Staff Commodore Welsh, Executive Secretary Morrison;
COMMITTEE CHAIRS: Chair Robb, Chair Westley
CLUB REPRESENTATIVES PRESENT: Charles Barclay, HYC, Phil Drips, WYC, John Haig, PHYC, Nancy Mulford, HYC, Lynn Silva, HYC, Greg Stephanoff, PHYC, Kate Thompson, HWYRA
2. MINUTES: It was moved by Dan Doyle, seconded by John Myrdal and unanimously agreed to approve the minutes of the Meeting of February 26, 2002 as distributed.
3. TREASURER’S REPORT: On the behalf of the Treasurer, Commodore Harper reported that HYRA has approximately $3000.00 in its checking account.
Commodore Harper reported that, at its May meeting, the Executive Committee agreed that HYRA would share race headquarters’ costs by supporting one telephone line and electricity for one year. This expenditure is seen as reimbursement for support provided to HYRA by Race Headquarters.
4. COMMODORE’S REPORT: Commodore Harper again stressed the importance of communication within the sailing community. As part of HYRA’s efforts to improve communication between sailors, HYRA is establishing a web site at www.ussailing.net/HYRA. Executive Secretary Ken Morrison distributed a memorandum that outlines plans for site. This will be a free web site. The Executive Secretary and the Secretary will manage it.
5. US SAILING REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT: Executive Secretary Ken Morrison reported that Susan Harper has been nominated to be Race Officer for Area H-W (Hawaii). She plans to complete this summer a Regional Race Officer certification to qualify for this position.
6. COMMITTEES UNDER THE COMMODORE:
a. NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Commodore Harper reported that it is too early in the year for the Nominating Committee to report on its recommendations for officers for 2003.
b. PUBLICITY: A Chair is needed for this Committee.
c. GOVERNMENT RELATIONS: A Chair is needed for this Committee
d. RACE MANAGEMENT: Chair Ken Morrison reported that the Rule 26 starting system has been embraced by most Oahu yacht clubs.
7. COMMITTEES UNDER THE VICE COMMODORE:
a. APPEALS: For Chair Joe Cochran, Ken Morrison reported that US SAILING resolved the appeal pending for Lipton Cup in support of the local protest committee’s finding in favor of WYC.
No appeals are currently underway.
b. RACING RULES: Chair Ken Morrison reported that ISAF recently announced a change to the Racing Rules of Sailing that affect the HYRA Prescriptions Sponsored and Sanctioned Races/Regattas and HYRA Prescriptions to Offshore Special Regulations. Copies of these revised documents were distributed.
c. SAFETY: For Chair Patrick Kudlich, Commodore Harper announced that June 13th HOST will present a panel discussion on hurricane disaster plans as they relate to harbors in Hawaii.
Ken Morrison distributed a revised HYRA Safety Equipment Checklist to ISAF Offshore Special Regulations 2002 – 2003 for Category 3 and 4 Races.
d. OFFSHORE: Chair Mike Welsh reported that HYC, KYC and WYC participated in Lipton I and that WYC won the series.
Chair Welsh also reported that WYC is preparing a notice of race for a special mid-summer regatta sponsored by Kenwood Wines. Charles Barclay reported HYC will hold the Mesick Series July 27th and 28th, and the HYC Wahine Race September 15th. Phil Drips reported that tonight Tom Pochereva will fax the notice of race for the Kalakaua Cup
.
e. ONE DESIGN: For Chair Steve Thomas, Rear Commodore Myrdal reported that the summer regattas involve Melges 24’s, J-24’s and Cal 20’s. KYC just concluded its second summer circuit series.
f. MULTI-HULL: No report
8. COMMITTEES UNDER THE REAR COMMODORE:
a. US SAILING YOUTH EVENTS: For Chair Guy Fleming, Rear Commodore Myrdal reported that Hawaii took a solid second in the Laser National for Youth.
b. US SAILING SENIOR EVENTS: For Chair Tom Pochereva, Rear Commodore Myrdal reported that the 49er World Championship will be held in Kaneohe Bay from June 15th to 22nd.
Ken Morrison announced that the National Offshore Championship will be held in Long Beach, California. Catalina 37’s will be used with a crew up to five members who have regularly raced together for at least one year. US SAILING, but not yacht club, membership is required. Contact Executive Secretary Morrison if your crew is interested in this event.
c. STATE SINGLE HANDED CHAMPIONSHIP: Rear Commodore Myrdal reported that organizational efforts are on track for this event.
d. STATE KEELBOAT CHAMPIONSIP: Rear Commodore John Myrdal reported that organizational efforts are on track for this event
e. HYSA: Chair Betsey Robb reported that summer programs are in full swing with Smythe and Bemis related races.
Vice Commodore Doyle announced that the Interscholastic League of Honolulu approved sailing as a sport. Eleven of the twenty-seven schools have indicated that they will be forming teams. This is an impressive feat as we have been pursuing recognition of sailing for over a decade. Guy Fleming and Scott Melander are to be congratulated.
f. WOMEN’S EVENTS: Chair Wesley reported that the Women’s National Championship was held last week and that Molly O’Brien plans to compete in the Adams Cup. Also, six women are flying to Kona to compete in a regatta.
9. COMMITTEES UNDER THE TREASURER:
a. BUDGET: The budget proposed for 2003 will be presented at the Fall General Membership meeting.
c. AUDIT: No report
d. AWARDS BANQUET: This event will be held November 23rd at HYC.
e. TROPHIES: Chair Welsh will report at the Fall General Membership meeting.
10. SECRETARY: No report
11. OLD BUSINESS: None
12. NEW BUSINESS:
Commodore Harper announced that the Golden Bear, Cal Maritime’s training ship will be in Honolulu Harbor next week. An open house is planned for June 18th. Call the School to make arrangement to attend the open house.
13. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 1855.
